140Sweets Raises More Than $2,550 for Autism Speaks

Social Media based charity sweetens the art of fundraising

May 20, 2010 (NEW YORK, NY) – Building upon their previous success of raising more than $1,100 for the American Cancer Society last fall, 140Sweets Charity held another sweet benefit on May 4, this time teaming with the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, Autism Speaks. When the powdered sugar settled, over $2550 was raised from selling cupcakes and raffle prizes.

More than 250 attendees stopped by Connolly’s Pub for the sugary sweet event, which was organized by 140Sweets founders, Anna O’Brien, Joey Pasion M.D. and Sara Wingert. The “Cupcake Bar” offered upwards of 30 types of cupcakes, all of which were donated by Cupcakes by Carousel and volunteers who signed up to support the charity as a baker. Cupcake flavors included S’mores, Red Velvet, Peanut Butter filled with Jam, Key lime, Strawberry daiquiri, Banana split, Maple bacon, Cream cheese cinnamon, and a number of gluten free options.

Raffle prizes were also handed out at the end of the evening. Some of the top prizes included a Pulse touch screen frame from Kodak, a Justin Tuck autographed football from the New York Giants and a one (1) night stay with breakfast for two(2) from the East 92nd street Courtland Marriott.

Keeping true to their social media roots, the 140Sweets event displayed live tweets with the #140Sweets hashtag, provided by LiveTweets. The sugary event was also showcased by a hanging colorful circular backdrop donated by Pink Inc Designs.

In addition to the fundraising party, donations were accepted online to benefit Autism Speaks, http://givenow.autismspeaks.org/140sweets

Ask & Ye Shall Recieve

April 22nd, 2010

This weekend I had a lengthy discussion with two social media friends of mine,  David Armano & Aaron Strout. The topic of discussion? Crocs. While some find these shoes silly or impractical, I love them. Who can hate a shoe that fits like a dream and after hours of exploring the city leaves your tootsies feeling grand? Its a rare shoe indeed.

Also, Crocs has done a lot to to revamp their line recently and create some more fashionable foot attire for women. I must say I am impressed.  So for much of my Saturday I was supporting and championing Croc’s improvements  on my personal twitter account. Some people didn’t see it my way, but it made for great discussion.

After all of this croc-talk, I thought maybe Crocs would be willing to return the favor and help to support @140sweets.

So I tweeted this:

And Crocs responded!

Crocs response made me love their brand even more. After explaining the event a  bit more over email, Crocs was more than willing to help. I’d like to thank the whole team at Crocs for their generous donation to @140Sweets. Every little bit counts and we’re honored to have you help us reach our fundraising goals.

Crocs, welcome to the @140Sweets family!

Paying it Forward

April 18th, 2010

Today as I was walking the bustling city streets with a dear friend of mine, and a stranger presented us with a flower and a smile. After a few steps we noticed a thin scrap of paper attached. On it was written “Pay it Forward.” This flower became a subtle reminder for why it is so important we are successful with our endeavors as 140Sweets.

The world has been good to us and we are forever grateful that when times have been difficult we have had great friends and support to get us through. 140Sweets lets us take that same care and pure love we received in our  times of need and pass them onto others. Much like this flower from a stranger brightened my day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in some one else’s.

As soon as we found out we would be working with Autism Speaks for our next event , we began to learn and explore how Autism has effected our community. We learned that 1 in every 110 kids is diagnosed with Autism, a brain disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Scarier yet is that these numbers are increasing 10-17 percent each year. The more we learn about this disorder the more grateful we have become for our own unique chance to “pay it forward.”

We hope that each of you will join with us on May 4th to raise funds for this truly remarkable charity and help us make a difference in the lives of those diagnosed with Autism.

140Sweets Launches Encore Event on May 4 to Benefit Autism Speaks

April 15, 2010 (NEW YORK, NY) – A mix of sugar, positivity, and philanthropy was the recipe for success for social media-based, 140Sweets (formerly known as Cupcakes4Charity) at its fall launch event October 2009. This year 140Sweets is supporting the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, Autism Speaks. On Tuesday, May 4, 140Sweets will hold its next event at Connolly’s Pub in NYC at 47th Street in between 6th ave and Broadway, from 6-10 pm. All proceeds benefit Autism Speaks.

With the desire to change the world, one cupcake at a time, the three 140Sweets founders – Anna O’Brien, Joey Pasion M.D., and Sara Wingert – began holding sweet dessert-driven events in order to raise money for charities that are close to their heart. Autism now affects 1 in 110 children – 1 in 70 boys. Autism Speaks is dedicated to funding research, raising awareness and advocating for the needs of families and individuals who are struggling with autism. The goal for this event is to exceed the $1,100 that was raised for the American Cancer Society at 140Sweets’s launch event last year.

“Who could possibly turn down a cupcake especially when the proceeds are going to help all those struggling with autism,” said Marc Sirkin, Chief Community Officer of Autism Speaks. “140Sweets is shining a bright light on autism and we are honored to have the support of such a dynamic and engaging organization.”

All cupcakes, space and raffle prizes will be donated to 140Sweets from our valued sponsors. More information will be posted as it becomes available on www.140Sweets.org, or follow the charity on Twitter at www.twitter.com/140Sweets

If you would like to attend the event, tickets and registration can be found at http://140sweets.eventbrite.com/

If you aren’t able to attend our fundraising party, but you would like to make a donation to our charity to benefit Autism Speaks, please follow this link. http://givenow.autismspeaks.org/140sweets

The Power of Baked Goods

October 15th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who attended our first Cupcakes for Charity event. With your help we raise more than $1,100 to benefit the American Cancer Society. For an event that was planned in less than two weeks by three friends who simply wanted to make a difference, the amount of money raised far exceeded our expectations!

We cannot thank enough the more than 150 attendees who came to our sugary sweet event. We’d like to remind everyone that all the treats were donated, and that we couldn’t have done this with out the support of the local bakeries as well as the volunteers who signed up for cupcake baking duty. These bakers brought upwards of 25 types of cupcakes, which lined the entire 16th floor of the Roger Smith Hotel.

During the event, over 250 tweets featuring the event’s hash tag, #C4CNYC, flooded Twitter. Thank you everyone for making #C4CNYC such a huge success!

Cupcake Porn- Thank You Bakers!

October 1st, 2009

We just wanted to write a quick post to thank all of the wonderful bakers bringing cupcakes to tonight’s #C4CNYC event. We also wanted to show the best cupcakes in prep shots we saw floating around the Internets last night.

Thanks @districtbelle, @mizcity, @devintrix, & @Passionmd for the hunger-making photos!
